CIRCLE PLAY

A Live Online Mixed Media Workshop
Picture
In an effort to help out independent craft stores and also continue to provide access to social distancing-friendly live mixed media classes, I've partnered with Stampers Grove in Scotland to bring you a Live online workshop offered via private Facebook group.
Picture
This class was held live on June 20, 2020. Registration is now closed.

  • Upon registration and payment (handled by Stampers Grove ,) you will receive a link to join our private Facebook group
  • You can join in and meet and interact with other students
  • The class itself was be taught through a Facebook Live video which is archived and available for viewing in the private classroom.
  • Work along with the video and ask questions via posts and comments
  • The video plus questions and comments will be available as a reference to re-watch later for up to 6 months.
  • Take and share photos of your in-progress and finished projects for feedback from me and other class members both during and after class
Class Description:
In this 2-hour online class we'll mix collage, monoprinting, stamping, and mark making to turn circular stamps into fabulous flowers or other creations. We'll start with a layered background and then combine stamps, mark making, and collage to turn ordinary circles into a delightful mixed media garden. (Feel free to choose another motif if you'd prefer - I'll share more ideas in our classroom.)
Class Cost: £15 (~$19US)

Student Supply List:
(Note that I will provide more details on choosing your supplies in a downloadable supply list available in the group. I've tried to give alternatives so you can shop your stash as much as possible.)

Tools:
  • A small Gel Press (or other gelatin plate) no larger than 5" x 7" and a brayer (I used a 3" x 5" Gel Press plate and a 2" PaperArtsy brayer. I will also show an alternative using card and a paintbrush if you don't have a Gel Press and / or brayer.)
  • Circular Rubber stamps  (I'll be using my new EGL08 stamp set from PaperArtsy but you can use other stamps or draw your own.)
  • Acrylic blocks if using unmounted stamps
  • Scissors

Adhesives:
  • A good glue stick or matte medium and a brush to apply (I'll be using an Avery glue stick.)

Paper & Substrates:
  • 1 sheet heavy weight watercolor paper, cardstock, or similar (my samples are 9" x 12" on 140 lb watercolor paper.) You can go smaller or even work in your art journal.
  • 6 - 8 good sized pieces of book paper, gelli prints, patterned paper, etc...  (no smaller than 2" x 3" but no larger than 8" x 10.")
  • A piece of green painted or gelli printed paper (or other color of your choice for leaves or other accents.) Patterned paper will also work.

Inks, Paints, Pens, etc...:
  • 2 colors of acrylic paint that blend well together (I'll be using PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylic Paints. My samples used Twilight and Professor Plum or Caramel and Haystack.)
  • An ink pad (my samples used Jet Black Archival Ink or Snowflake StazOn Pigment Ink. I also like VersaFine Clair pigment ink.)
  • Pens or markers for doodling and mark making (I'll be using a Uniball Signo white and gold gel pen and a black Uniball Vision Elite or Micron pen.) Posca paint pens and other gel pens or similar are great.

Miscellaneous:
  • Baby wipes and / or paper towels

Optional Tools & Supplies:
  • Heat gun
  • Brown & Black or other color ink pads for edging
  • White paint or acrylic ink

Administrative & Technical Details and FAQ
Technical Requirements:
  • You must have a Facebook account - it's the only way we can admit you to the private Facebook classroom
  • Your computer or device should be capable of viewing video with a strong enough internet connection to stream the lesson
  • Check ahead of time to ensure that you can hear and see videos on Facebook (you usually need to both click into a live video and unmute it in order to hear and read and add comments.)
  • I highly recommend that if you don't already have it, that you download the Facebook app on your phone or device and get logged in and set up. This will make it so you can easily take in-progress photos to post for feedback directly from the app.

Administrative Details & Class Policies:
  • Unfortunately, because this is an online class where you can view the content and have full access even if you miss the livestream (which will be archived in the group,) there are no cancellations or refunds.
  • Since this is an online class, we just want to make sure it's clear that you'll be responsible for providing all of your own supplies (please see the supply list above.) I've tried to give lots of options and alternatives so that you can pull from your stash wherever possible. Stampers Grove also has many of the supplies available in their shop so if you have something you need or see something that you want to try, I hope you'll help support the store. (And contact the shop if you need something that isn't linked - they may have it!)
FAQ:
Q: How long will the Facebook group be available after the Live video is over?
A: The group will remain open for you to re-watch the video and ask questions for 6 months after the date of the live class (Dec. 20, 2020.)

Q: Can I register after the live class is over?
A: We will be keeping the classroom open for a while after the Live, so you will be able to sign up later, but without the live interaction. The length of time additional registrations will be taken is TBD, but note that the group will close on December 20, 2020.

Q: When will I get access to the Facebook group?
A: Please allow 24-48 hours for Stampers Grove to process your registration and send you a group invitation.

Q: Can I place a shop order from Stampers Grove if I live outside of the UK?
A: Yes - the shop will ship internationally.
