GETTIN' EDGY

A Live Online Mixed Media Workshop
Picture
In an ongoing effort to help out friends who own independent craft stores and also continue to provide access to social distancing-friendly live mixed media classes, I've partnered with Everything Scrapbook & Stamps in Lake Worth, Florida to bring you the second in my new series of live online workshops offered via private Facebook group.
Picture
Class was held live on Saturday, May 2, 2020. Registration is now closed.

This live online workshop, Gettin' Edgy, will be as much like an in person class as possible but with the added advantages of an online forum.
Picture
  • Upon registration and payment (handled by Everything Scrapbook & Stamps,) you will receive a link to our private Facebook group
  • There will be several exclusive downloads from me for you to use in class or in other projects
  • You can join in and meet and interact with other students prior to the start of class
  • I'll share a tutorial in the group so you can prepare some of the project elements ahead of time
  • You get a 10% coupon for online orders from Everything Scrapbook & Stamps to stock up on class supplies (this will be shared in the Facebook group.)
  • The class itself will be taught through a Facebook Live video hosted only in the private group
  • Work along with me, react, and ask questions during the demo via comments
  • The video plus questions and comments will be available as a reference to re-watch later
  • Take and share photos of your in-progress and finished projects for feedback from me and other class members both during and after class
  • Finished projects will be included in a shared album for everyone to get more ideas and inspiration

Class Description:
In this live online class, we'll create "edgy" and out-of-the-box art journals using stamps and stencils, watercolors and acrylic paint, and more as we craft our own unique, fun and funky journals. Pick the shapes, theme, and color palette of your choice to fully customize your book. I'll give you homework to get you started prepping for your project and during class I'll demo coloring and creating shaped page edges, creating a fun background for you to collage or journal on later, and show you a unique way to use acrylic inks or paints to make your cover. We'll assemble our journals together and then you can complete all of the pages during any remaining class time or on your own when you're ready.
Class Cost: $40
Student Supply List:
  • 4 pieces of 140lb watercolor paper (I used 9" x 12" for a finished book 9" tall and about 7-1/2" wide. You can also use heavy weight Bristol, mixed media paper, cardstock, or other papers of a similar weight and absorbancy.)
  • Baby wipes and paper towels
  • Pencil & eraser
  • Sharp scissors for detail cutting
  • Several colors of acrylic paint* in the color palette you want for your journal's theme. I recommend at least one light opaque color.
  • Paint brushes or water brushes (I recommend a few sizes of brushes suitable for watercolor. A 1/2" flat or Bright, a size 6 or 8 round, a size 2 round are a good mix, but you don't need those exact sizes or types.)
  • Sponge applicators or blending brushes for ink
  • Stencils (a variety of images that go with the theme for your book to use on your pages. You can also use larger stamp designs or printed or hand-drawn images.) I'll be using my stencils from StencilGirl (you can see which ones are mine on my website, but the store also carries many of these.)
  • Rubber Stamps - larger images in your theme if you want them for your pages, smaller images and a few background and / or texture stamps. (I'll be using my stamps from PaperArtsy.)
  • Ink pads - permanent ink like Archival Ink or pigment ink that won't react to water or smear. (I recommend brown and black, plus other colors if you'd like.)
  • Holbein Acryla Gouache* (you can also use watercolors, watercolor pencils, water-soluble crayons, etc... I like Acryla because they dry permanent and have great pigmentation. You can also use acrylic paints, paint pens, markers, etc...)
  • Holbein Acrylic Inks*- black plus a few other colors (you can use another brand if you prefer, or you can water down acrylic paints or use an airbrush acrylic paint like Golden High Flow. For black, I like Holbein's Super Opaque Black, but you could also use a black pen or marker for that part.)
  • Water spritzer / mister
  • A heat gun
  • A drinking straw
  • A pen that can write on paint (I use a Uni-Ball Vision Elite, but even a ball point pen will work.)
  • An awl, tapestry needle, or something to poke holes for the binding of your book.
  • Waxed linen thread, embroidery thread, or other strong yarn or fiber to bind your book (about 1-1/2 to 2 feet.)

Optional Supplies:
  • Glue stick (I like Avery, but use whatever you like best)
  • A gold and / or white gel pen (I like Uni-Ball)
  • Washi tape - I used 7 different patterns in widths from 1/4" to 3/4" but you can make them all the same or skip them completely.
  • A gold paint pen (I use Pen Touch)
  • 1-2 colors of embossing powders - I'll be using my Boho Blends EP (if you're going to emboss, your heat gun should easily melt EP - Ranger isn't good.)
  • Stabilo All black pencil
  • Teflon craft mat (to protect your surface if you heat emboss)
  • A FineLine bottle for black acrylic ink. (You can also use a pen or marker.)
  • An X-Acto knife, ruler, and cutting mat if you want to put a window in the cover of your journal. You can also use scissors or a paper trimmer.
  • A charm or dangle for the spine of your book if you'd like to add one.

Administrative & Technical Details and FAQ
Technical Requirements:
  • You must have a Facebook account - it's the only way we can admit you to the private Facebook classroom
  • Your computer or device should be capable of viewing video with a strong enough internet connection to stream the lesson
  • Check ahead of time to ensure that you can hear and see videos on Facebook (you usually need to both click into a live video and unmute it in order to hear and read and add comments.)
  • I highly recommend that if you don't already have it, that you download the Facebook app on your phone or device and get logged in and set up. This will make it so you can easily take in-progress photos to post for feedback directly from the app.
Administrative Details & Class Policies:
  • Unfortunately, because this is an online class where you can view the content and have full access even if you miss the livestream, there are no cancellations or refunds.
  • Registration and the private Facebook group will open on April 13, 2020.
  • The coupon from Everything Scrapbook & Stamps will be given in the Facebook group and available after you've been added.
  • I usually bring a fair amount of products and goodies to my classes for students to use. However since this is an online class, we just want to make sure it's clear that aside from the downloads posted in the Facebook group, you'll be responsible for providing all of your own supplies (please see the supply list above.) I've tried to give lots of options and alternatives so that you can pull from your stash wherever possible. Everything Scrapbook & Stamps also has most of the supplies available in their shop so if you have something you need or see something that you want to try, I hope you'll help support the store - make sure to use the coupon while you're at it!
FAQ:
Q: How long will the Facebook group be available after the Live video is over?
A: Indefinitely... we have no plans to close the group. We will, however, be closing registration before the Live - you must sign up ahead of time to get into the group, but you won't lose access after it's over.

Q: When and how do we get the coupon code?
A: Michelle (Everything Scrapbook & Stamps) will share the code in the private Facebook group. This can be used multiple times, but it cannot be shared outside of the group - it will only be valid for customers on the class list. Also, although the store can ship internationally if you message them to arrange it, the cost of shipping can be more than you save with the coupon and given the current global situation, packages would likely not arrive before class. We can help point you to a list of global stockists if there's anything you want to order for class.

Q: Who can take this class?
A: Anyone! As long as you have an internet connection and access to Facebook, you're welcome to sign up.
