In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak and with the desire to try and help friends who own independent brick and mortar craft stores (and to provide options for those of us who have had workshops canceled but still want to learn and craft at home,) I've partnered with Papercraft Clubhouse in Westbrook, CT to bring you an all new type of mixed media workshop... a live class offered via private Facebook group.
Class was held live on Saturday, April 18, 2020. Registration is now closed.
The live online workshop, Mix & Morph, will be as much like an in person class as possible but with the added advantages of an online forum.
  • Upon registration and payment (handled by Papercraft Clubhouse,) you will be invited to a private Facebook group
  • There will be several exclusive downloads from me for you to use in class or in other projects
  • You can join in and meet and interact with other students prior to the start of class
  • I'll share a tutorial in the group so you can prepare some of the project elements ahead of time
  • You get a 10% coupon for online orders from Papercraft Clubhouse to stock up on class supplies (this will be shared in the Facebook group.)
  • The class itself will be taught through a Facebook Live video hosted only in the private group
  • Work along with me, react, and ask questions during the demo via comments
  • The video plus questions and comments will be available as a reference to re-watch later
  • Take and share photos of your in-progress and finished projects for feedback from me and other class members both during and after class
  • Finished projects will be included in a shared album for everyone to get more ideas and inspiration
Class Description:
In this live online class, we'll mix water soluble and permanent mediums to create a richly layered background. Then we'll take the focal element of your choice and morph it into an explosion of shapes and motifs using rubber stamps or other designs. The end result? A mash-up of techniques and images that form a completed art journal page or mixed media artwork.
Class Cost: $40
Student Supply List:
  • An art journal or other substrate for your project (I recommend watercolor or other thick paper or a substrate with an absorbant surface.)
  • Baby wipes
  • Pencil & eraser
  • Sharp scissors for detail cutting
  • A roll of blue painter's tape (or other removable tape, at least 1" wide)
  • A few colors of acrylic paint (I'll be using PaperArtsy paints) I would recommend including white or something very light and opaque.
  • Paint brushes (I recommend a few sizes of round, hard bristled brushes good for stippling.)
  • Matte medium and a brush or palette knife to apply
  • A few colors of dye ink sprays or stains (Distress Ink or Distress Oxide sprays or your other favorite brand. I do not recommend Dylusions sprays  - they're too reactive and will blend too much with other layers.)
  • Glue stick (I like Avery, but use whatever you like best)
  • A white glue like PVA or Tacky or Sobo Glue
  • A few sheets of patterned paper or gelli prints in the same color family (smaller background patterns work best)
  • Stencils (a large design for your focal image and a smaller patterned design for the background. You can also use stamps or hand-drawn images.) I'll be using my stencils from StencilGirl (you can see which ones are mine on my website, but the Clubhouse also carries many of these.)
  • Stamps or other images you can cut out to use to "morph" your image. (I'll be using my stamps from PaperArtsy.)
  • Ink pads - permanent ink like Archival Ink that won't react to water.
  • Paper for stamping / coloring images (I used cotton rag watercolor paper. I recommend something thin but that can hold up to wet mediums.)
  • Water soluble crayons or pencils (ie Dina Wakley Scribble Sticks, Distress Crayons, Caran d'Ache Neocolor II, Stabilo Woodies, Marabu crayons, watercolor pencils, etc...)
  • A water brush or paint brushes with water
  • A heat gun
  • A pen that can write on paint (I use a Uni-Ball Vision Elite, but even a ball point pen will work.)

Technical Requirements:
  • You must have a Facebook account - it's the only way we can admit you to the private Facebook classroom
  • Your computer or device should be capable of viewing video with a strong enough internet connection to stream the lesson
  • Check ahead of time to ensure that you can hear and see videos on Facebook (you usually need to both click into a live video and unmute it in order to hear and read and add comments.)
  • I highly recommend that if you don't already have it, that you download the Facebook app on your phone or device and get logged in and set up. This will make it so you can easily take in-progress photos to post for feedback directly from the app.
Administrative Details & Class Policies:
  • Unfortunately, because this is an online class where you can view the content and have full access even if you miss the livestream, there are no cancellations or refunds.
  • Registration and the private Facebook group are both now open. You'll be added to the group after your signup has processed.
  • The coupon from Papercraft Clubhouse will be given in the Facebook group and available after you've been added.
  • I usually bring a fair amount of products and goodies to my classes for students to use. However since this is an online class, we just want to make sure it's clear that aside from the downloads posted in the Facebook group, you'll be responsible for providing all of your own supplies (please see the supply list above.) I've tried to give lots of options and alternatives so that you can pull from your stash wherever possible. The Clubhouse also has most of the supplies available in their shop so if you have something you need or see something that you want to try, I hope you'll help support the store - make sure to use the coupon while you're at it!
FAQ:
Q: How long will the Facebook group be available after the Live video is over?
A: Indefinitely... we have no plans to close the group. We will, however, be closing registration before the Live - you must sign up ahead of time to get into the group, but you won't lose access after it's over.

Q: When and how do we get the coupon code?
A: Tracie (from Papercraft Clubhouse) will share the code in the private Facebook group. This can be used multiple times, but it cannot be shared outside of the group - it will only be valid for customers on the class list. Also, although the Clubhouse can ship internationally if you message Tracie to arrange it, the cost of shipping is more than you save with the coupon and given the current global situation, packages would likely not arrive before class. We can help point you to a list of global stockists if there's anything you want to order for class.

Q: I'm having trouble adding the class to my cart... help?
A: Make sure to click the "select date" button right below the price to pick the date (there's only one) and then enter your name. Then it should work. We've heard of some people having trouble even after doing this... it seems to work fine in Firefox and Chrome browsers, but if you're using IE you may be having issues. If you can't get it to work, you can call the store (860-399-4443) or message the shop on Facebook.

Q: Can I pay for the class or class supplies with PayPal?
A: Unfortunately, the shop initially set up PayPal in order to take payment for classes, but we had so many signups so quickly that PayPal decided that the store was a scammer and shut down their access. PayPal has now been turned off as a payment option. If you're not able to pay online via credit card, call the store (860-399-4443) or message the shop on Facebook and they'll help work out another option.
