Mixed Media Medallions*

 Class Description:
In this full-day class, we'll play with stencils, beads, findings, and more as we create our own beautiful mixed media medallions. I'll show you how to use your stencil to create a textured frame around your focal image, and then we'll use clay, found objects, metal, and more to accessorize our frames and turn them into mixed media masterpieces perfect for mounting on a panel, a book cover, or even to be used as a piece of statement jewelry.

Students should bring:
  • A basic mixed media kit (craft mat, baby wipes, paper towels, gesso, gel medium, scissors)
  • If you have them, circular or medallion-esque stencils (larger designs, at least 5-6" wide)
  • Metal findings, beads, chains, crystals... anything you think you'd like to use in your medallion (I'll have some you can use as well)
  • Molding or Modeling paste (Light is best - it dries faster)
  • Strong glue (Helmar Quick Dry, Lock-Tight, E-6000)
  • A few colors of paint for your medallion (several shades of the same or similar hue will work well)
  • Paintbrush (1/2" flat or a large round brush will be fine)
Optional:
  • A stamp or image to use as the focal point (note that magazine pages will wrinkle badly - you want something stamped or copied onto cardstock-weight paper)
  • Colored pencils
  • Paints or mediums to add a patina effect to your metal
  • Clay tools
  • Stickles, Liquid Pearls, glitter, etc...
  • Diamond Glaze or similar to fill your medallion (it takes time to dry, so you may want to do this step at home)
I will provide:
  • Aves Apoxie Clay
  • A variety of beads, metal findings, and other goodies
  • Stencils and stamps to share
  • Options for the focal image of your medallion
*Note that this workshop is exclusive to Eat Cake Create retreats in the Western United States and Canada throughout 2019.
