I love working in handmade journals - I can use materials that work with my style and bind them a bit more loosely so that there's room for me to put layers on the pages without having the edges of the book fan open. These journals feature the same materials and binding techniques that I use for my own books and are ideal for art journals, scrapbooks, or sketching and watercolor books. They're big enough that you can try out lots of techniques or do plenty of sketching and painting, but they're still small enough to travel.
These little books measure 9-3/4" x 6-1/2" x 1-1/2" and the pages are 6" wide x 9" tall. There are 58 usable pages total, made from 140lb (300gsm) watercolor paper and stitched into five signatures with waxed linen thread. The cases (covers and spine) are made from 2mm archival binder's board and the end papers on the insides of the covers are all hand-marbled. The covers themselves have been covered with either screen-printed cotton rag paper from India or traditional Florentine patterns on cartridge paper from Italy.
The spines are covered with coordinating fabric binding tape and embellished with vintage ribbon and / or embroidered trims from India and / or China. Each book is finished with metal corners on front and back covers to protect them from damage - that's especially helpful if you travel with your journals like I often do!
