This mixed media statement necklace is a choker style with an extra-long pendant drop filled with handmade, semi-precious gemstone, and globally sourced elements. I made some of the components as demos in my Make a Statement live online class and then had the great opportunity to complete it to be used in a feature article in the Winter 2022 issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine.
This necklace features one of my handmade fabric "obi" beads made from vintage hand-dyed fabric and wrapped in a scrap of lamé I picked up in Mongolia and Indian goldwork thread. The pendant is handmade from a wood base covered in embossing powder that was stamped for texture. On top of that I've layered more lamé topped with a semi-precious gemstone donut, Czech glass flower and seed beads, and then brass leaves and another glass flower. The focal piece is wired to the wood and the back is covered with painted cotton felt to prevent any snagging. The connecting beads are a mix of ceramic, African recycled glass, and bronze and aqua colored Dogon (Dutch Donut) trade beads as well as brass spacers. I also used a large brass feather to connect the top and bottom sections. I finished the pendant with a brass African boule bead and a teal ceramic bird from Israel. The "chain" is recycled sari silk with an antique brass toggle closure.
The "chain" is ~13" (it's a choker,) and the pendant drop is another 9."
