This unique mixed media wall hanging is one of my favorite pieces. The base is Khadi paper - a handmade cotton rag paper from India. I've layered ink and stenciling on the base and then a beautiful and fragile handmade lace paper. The focal point is a mask image from my Boho Faces stencil from StencilGirl. I stenciled it, hand-painted with Golden So Flat acrylic paints, then hand-stitched and embroidered all of the outlining and details on the face with Wonderfil embroidery thread and a gold zardosi embroidery thread from India. I've accented the main piece with sari patches from India as well as recycled fused glass beads from Africa and an extra large black Dogon (Dutch Donut) trade bead around one eye. Hanging from the bottom is a painted and stenciled drilled stone and an antique Burmese coin.
The hanger on top is made with a driftwood base that was wrapped with sari silk, brass wire and semi-precious gemstone beads, painted terra cotta and glass beads from India, and Czech glass seed beads. I added additional wrapping as well as a loop for hanging using Indian zardosi goldwork threads.
The main paper portion of the piece measures 8-1/2" x 12" while the driftwood is 10" long by ~5/8" in diameter. The entire hanging length including the loop is ~22-1/2."
