Vintage Japanese Kinkoma Thread (also known as Japan Thread) is a beautiful bright gold or silver dimensional thread that's used in goldwork embroidery. It's great for outlining your embroidered elements or adding bold details. It's also perfect for wrapping and other mixed media applications.
Kinkoma Thread, (more commonly referred to as "Japan Thread" outside of Japan,) is a beautiful dimensional thread that's used in goldwork embroidery. This is a vintage thread that was purchased as part of a bulk skein directly from my supplier in Japan. It's a bright gold colored gold leaf wrapped around a polyester core and measures ~0.5mm thick. The wrapping creates a kind of segmentation of the thread so it bends and curves perfectly when you use it to outline elements in stitching and embroidery projects. (To add it to your projects, you lay it in place and then stitch over it with couching stitches. Traditionally you do it in a matching gold thread, but a lot of modern embroidery projects use contrasting couching colors - anything goes!)
You'll get 10 yards of thread that have been hand-wound on a wooden spool which measures 2" tall x 1-1/4" in diameter at the widest points.

Here you can see where I embroidered and added beading to this fabric that had a batik printed bird and then I outlined it with this same gold Kinkoma / Japan thread and stitched it down by couching over it with gold metallic thread. (This also works beautifully if you want to outline an embroidered block print.)
Outlining with Japan Thread really finishes a piece and provides a subtle but unmistakable bit of blingy texture and shine. |
