The Hanging Art Journal

Take your art out of the journal and turn it into a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind wall hanging!

In this full-day workshop, you will learn three different background techniques to apply to three different pages of your “journal.” We’ll embellish the pages and assemble them into a hanging piece of art. (You’ll also have the option to bind it into the beginnings of a book or a standing accordion display if preferred.)

We’ll use fabric, paper, heat embossing, beads, found objects, and more as you create our own unique journal.

Students should bring:
  • A craft mat, baby wipes, scissors
  • Gesso (I like also colored background paints by Matisse, or craft paints work as well)
  • A variety of collage papers, ephemera, jewels, trims, fabrics, etc…
  • Acrylic Paint – a few favorite colors
  • Paint brushes (1″ and 1/2″ flat, detail brush, round brush – #4 is good)
  • Matte medium and a brush or sponge to apply it
  • Glue or gel / heavy gel medium (I like Locktite Superglue – Ultragel Control and E6000 or Goop)
Optional:
  • Embroidered trims/fabric, embellishments, lace, etc…
  • Small found objects and/or jewelry – not too large or heavy.
  • Beads and/or charms. (I’ll have some to share as well.)
  • Favorite stencils and/or stamps
  • Rub-on letters or alphabet stamps
  • Heat gun
  • Black and Brown StazOn ink pads
  • Needle and embroidery thread (I especially like gold thread)
  • Your favorite mark making tools

Teacher will provide:
  • Paper for the pages of your journal
  • Grommets and tools for binding the pages
  • Fibers, fabrics, beads, and embellishments to share
  • Stencils and stamps to share
  • Various mediums, glues, and supplies for the background techniques
