Art Basics Heavy Black Gesso is water-based, but permanent and flexible after drying. You can use it as a ground on paper, canas, etc... and work on top of it with acrylics or other mediums, but it will also mix with pigments or acrylic paints and mediums to create a range of customized, colored grounds.
