Japanese Chiyogami (Yuzen) paper, available in quarter and 8-1/2"x11" sheets, provides the perfect accent to art journal spreads, handmade cards, mixed media artwork, and much more.
I love to use Japanese Chiyogami paper in my work (you may also have heard it called Yuzen paper.) These gorgeous decorative papers feature silk-screened designs on sheets of kozo and sulphite. These patterns were originally designed as woodblock prints, created to make accessories for home decor. They emulated the kimonos worn by the wealthy in larger cities, especially in Kyoto where the Yuzen area was famous for its techniques in cloth dyeing (hence one of the popular names for this paper!)
These papers were meant to be cut into small pieces for making paper dolls (washi ningyo,) or to be glued onto small boxes and containers. The small scale patterns are still prevalent today, making them fantastic for use in card making, art journaling, book making, and just about anything else you can think of!
The full-sized sheets I get are 36" x 24," which makes them very difficult for most people to cut and even harder to ship (not to mention quite expensive!) so I'm offering these sheets cut down to 12" x 18" or 8.5" x 11" sizes; larger sheets will come rolled and shipped in a tube.
The paper itself has a luscious texture, almost fabric-like, and the pigmentation on the printing is truly outstanding. There are also metallic gold accents (or even full backgrounds!) on many of the designs. The lacquered Yuzen papers have a thick, enamel-esque finish and a slightly embossed texture. The lacquered areas are the red design on a black background. Pictures don't do these gorgeous papers justice!
Below I've included close-ups of each of the available patterns, photographed with a ruler so you can see the scale of the pattern on each design. (Note that I try my best to accurately show the colors of the prints, but please make allowances for differences in monitor and screen display.)
