Watercolor brushes can be a huge expense and if you're just starting out, taking the plunge for genuine squirrel or sable brushes can put a dent in your budget. But this starter set of Shami round watercolor brushes from ShinHan art has 5 student grade brushes in a good range of sizes. Rounds are my preferred shape for watercolor (I sometimes use Filberts or spotters as eradicators, but 95% of the time I use rounds or quills / petit gris.) This set features synthetic bristles that come to a nice point so that you can use point - pressure techniques for lines, shading, and washes and also work with just the longest and finest hairs for details.
These brushes were designed to hold their hairs both during painting and cleaning (which I can't say for some introductory brushes that I've tried!) They also stay soft and flexible and can be reformed after you clean them. To clean your brushes, just run them under warm water to wash out the paint and use your fingers to gently reshape brush hairs, making sure to bring the tips to a smooth point. Rest them horizontally (use a brush rest if you have one) for 24 hours or overnight before returning them to be stored upright or in a brush roll. (Keeping water out of the ferrule will help with longer life for your brush and is also better for helping brushes to reform and maintain their shape. Once a brush has lost its tip, it's much harder to use and extremely difficult to ever reform it.)
Each set comes with 5 brushes in sizes 2, 6, 8, 10, and 15.
